So let's get started!

Do you know what "pearl of wisdom" means?

Today's expression seems to be really useful. You may hear it all the time in sitcoms and movies. Ok now imagine you've got a crush on a girl [that means you like her], but you're really shy. You've actually been living this platonic love [this is the kind of love you have for someone without him/her knowing] since you were a kid, but never really said anything else other than 'hi'. One day you decide to tell your friend about what you've been through. See what happens during the dialogue:

-You know that girl I told you about before?
-The blonde one you can't stop talking about? You bet I do!
-Yeah! I know it will sound weird, but I've been willing to talk to her in ages but really never got up the courage. What do you think I should do?
-Just talk to her. What's the worst thing that could happen?
-Thank you for that pearl of wisdon, Tom. Don't you think I've never thought about that before? It's not that simple.

Did you understand what "pearl of wisdom" means? Wisdom is what makes people wise. Maybe you can say your grandparents have wisdom because they've  lived a whole life and have a lot of good advises to give you. But wait, when you thank someone for his "pearl of wisdom", you're being very ironic. Actually what you mean to say is "thank you, but your piece of advice is really bad! Can you suggest something else?". Pearl of wisom is usually used humorously to mean the opposite.

Expression: TO KICK UP A FUSS ABOUT SOMETHING

Have you heard of the word fuss before? And even if you have, do you know what it means? Well, the word fuss is the same as the word complain, as in "what are you fussing about now?". But opposed to the word complain, fuss is a word very creatively used in some interesting expressions. Most of the expressions with the word fuss means "to complain", but they bring a much more intense meaning to the act of complaining.

If you say you complained about the food you were served at a restaurant, maybe people will understand you tried to be as polite as you could and made a point not to call anybody's attention. On the other hand, if you say you kicked up a fuss about the food at a restaurant, people will have an idea of what a mess you made. Maybe they'll think you were so upset at the restaurant while kicking up a fuss about the food that the manager came to apologize. You see the difference? Although "to kick a fuss" is the same as to complain, the expression makes it clear the complaint was pretty bitter.

Veja se você consegue entendê-la através desse exemplo: If you don't speak English, you've got a real handicap.

No exemplo acima, handicap significa desvantagem. Veja novamente o exemplo om a tradução:  If you don't speak English, you've got a real handicap.

-His lack of height can prove a handicap against tall players.

Mas aí temos o segundo significado para a palavra handicap: mental/physical disability, como em "She can't drive because of her visual handicap."

That's it for today guys. Hope to see you soon!

Expressions with the word SPOT (part 2)

Okay, let's take up where we left off. As I said before, there are still many expressions with the word spot, and they're all too important to just be ignored. But this time, I'll just try to hit the high spots! Oh wait, I just mentioned our first expression of the day: to hit the high spots. What does that mean?

When you hit the high spots, you wanna do only important, obvious or good things. Take myself as an example. I said I wanted to hit the high spots this time because last time I focused too much on the details of the expressions. If it's still not clear to understand, imagine yourself at a meeting. You and your work mates have actually set up some other meetings in the past to discuss the same report. This time though, before the meeting starts, you say: Let's not discuss the entire report. Let's just hit the high spots! When your coworkers hear you say that, they'll understand they're not supposed to go into detail this time.

Okay, now let's learn one more expression. Maybe this is the most known one. I hear it all the time on TV: a leopard cannot change his spots. Let us go by parts! First of all, do you know what a leopard is? It is a
large, spotted animal of the cat family. If you don't get it yet, just look at the picture to your side. That's a leopard. When you say a leopard cannot change its spots, it means one cannot change the basic way one is. In other words, if you're a bad person, you'll always be a bad person. You can't just become a good person all of a sudden, cause a "leopard cannot change its spots".

Now tell me: Have you ever been intimadated to do or say something? Let's suppose for instance you promised your boss you'd get all of your paperwork done by noon. The problem is that you didn't imagine your promise would be so hard to keep, and now you find yourself needing at least a couple of extra days to get it done. When your boss knows about it, he doesn't react the best way. Actually, he puts you on the spot by demanding that you do everything you had promised within 24 hours, tops. But what does to put someone on the spot mean? It means to demand that someone produce as expected, like your boss did to you in the example. It can also mean to ask someone forthright questions, like when someone keeps asking you about a secret and you just can't tell. In that case, the person is putting you on the spot to get the answer he wants.

I really don't wanna scare you, but there are actually many other expressions with the word spot. That's not all. But I'll take some time before coming up with the third part. In the meantime, try to put all of the expressions learnt so far into practice. See you!

Expressions with the word SPOT (part 1)

The word SPOT is very simple. You know what it reminds me of? It reminds of the american sitcom The Big Bang Theory. That's because Sheldon, one of the main characters, won't let anyone sit in his "special" place in the couch. He calls it his "spot". If you havent watched that sitcom yet, don't miss that chance! The Big
Bang Theory is a great sitcom to have fun while learning English.

But let's go back to the word spot. I think you know what spot means now that I've mentioned the Sheldon's example. But in the case you don't watch the sitcom, besides being a specific place, spot can also mean "a rounded mark or stain made by foreign matter like paint, ink, etc...". Is it easier to undertsnad now? Let's jump right into the expressions with the word spot now. That's what matters the most.

Imagine yourself being in a very tight place. It's uncomfortable, it bothers you because it is somehow a problem. The figurative sense of that idea is kind of what our first expression means. If you see someone saying he's in a tight spot, for example, it means he's caught in a problem (most of the time in a financial problem). Take this example: Jook, John, I'm in a tight spot. Can you lend me twenty dollars? Notice that that expression is rather general. Although it can be used to tell people you're broke, it doesn't necessarily mean only that. You may also be caught in a problem for other reasons.

Now our next expression has nothing to do with the previous one. It is related to an emotional reaction towards fear or suprise. Among many reactions someone can have when surprised or fearful, maybe you're one of those who become unable to move. Let's suppose Chandler saw a ghostly figure. He was so scared he stood rooted to the spot. In other words, he was so scared he couldn't move at all. That's exactly what the expression means: to be uncapable of moving because of fear or surprise. What can make you stand rooted to your spot? Particularly, I can't remember the last time I was that scared. What about you?

Our third expression with the word spot has somehow to do with a kind of emotion as well. Pretend you have a friend called Michel who's passionate about cats. She has about 5 cats and is about to get the sixth one. While talking to another friend of yours about her, you say: Michel has a soft spot for cats. What does that mean? Well, it means she's got a fondness for cats, she loves them. You could also say "she has a soft spot in her heart for cats." It makes it even clearer she really loves them. The one thing to keep in mind is that you can use that expression with animal, things and even people. If you like someone special, you can say you have a soft spot for him/her. Isn't it great?

There are still many other exressions with the word spot to touch on, but I just realized how long this post has become. So I'll leave the rest of the expressions for the next post. I'll call it "part 2". Stick around!

Phrasal verbs: look/kiss up to someone

Sally looks up to her boss.
Sally kisses up to her boss.
To look up to someone significa admirar, tem respeito por alguém. If I kiss up to my boss, maybe I'll get the promotion.

A expressão é "to give someone a piece of mind". Extatamente. Veja um exemplo dela: I've had enough of him coming lae home. I'm going to give him a piece of mind when he gets in tonight.

É o caso da expressão "to be of like mind". Neste caso, you and your friend are of like mind on most political issues. Veja: There was a true meeting of minds between me and my friend when we talked about political issues.

Phrasal verb TO NARROW DOWN

Logo no outro dia, ele vai até você e diz: According to your house, I can narrow the choice down to green or red.
We narrowed the choice to you and Paul. [Nós reduzimos as opções para você e Paul.]

Do you know what the expression "Tom, Dick and/or Harry" means?

When you want to refer to people that you don't know and are not welcome in a specific situation, you can use that expression. I know, it's still hard to get that. But let us take it one step at a time. Take this example for now: Sally's in her appartment, whose window faces the streets. There's always a great flow of people passing by, which allows some unwelcome people to stop by and gaze through her window. To avoid that, she decides to ask someone that's standing by the window: Please, draw the curtains or we'll have every Tom, Dick and Harry peering through the window.

You see what Sally just said here? She's trying to preserve her privacy by keeping unknown people from peering through her window. "Tom, Dick and Harry" represent here those people she does now know, people that are not importante. We can't blame Sally. Having people snooping into your house is not a pleasant thing. But let's move on to our next example!

You can also use the expression "Tom, Dick and Harry" to refer to people that are not qualified or capable enough to do a certain job. Picture this: Sônia is having plumbing poblems at home. She's really willing to find a good professional to take care of that, so she says: I want a qualified plumber, not just any Tom, Dick and Harry. I don't know where that expression came from, but if we take into consideration that Tom, Dick and Harry are really common names in any English speaking country, we can get to the conclusion that that's why they're used as an expression to refer to very average people, people that are not important (which is not nice, since my name's Tom hahaha).

That's it for now. See you guys later!

It's about time!

Nobody likes to wait. I bet you've been through a situation in your life where you had to wait longer than you expected, and when your wait was finally through, you couldn't help but show a little bit of your disappointment.

Let's suppose you set up a time with your friend to meet up at a shopping center. To make sure you won't be late in the case you get stuck in traffic, you leave home a little earlier. What you didn't expect though was that only one and a half hour later your friend would  finally show up. You can barely hide your disappointment when he arrives, so you say: So you finally got here! It's about time!

When you say "It's about time!", you're sayin in other words that it's almost too late, or that you've been waiting a long time. Don't forget the right intonation. It should make it clear you're disappointed on how late something or someone is. Let's try another example! Think of the times you borrowed someone money or anything else and it took ages until you finally got it back. Imagine yourself borrowing a friend some money on the condition that he'd pay you back within one month, tops. The thing is it's been 3 months now and you've not been paid back yet. On the fourth month, when you least expected, there he comes with your money and of course a bunch of excuses. You try to be cordial and not to show any frustration, but while talking to somene else about him, you say: He finally paid my money! It's about time!

I'm sure you'll find yourself using that expression very often from now on. After all, we're always dealing with situations like those in our lives. Hope you liked our today's post. See you!

Expressões: lay hold of/lose hold on

Vamos começar pela expressão "to lay hold of something or someone".

Just wait till I lay hold of Bill! [Espere até eu pôr minhas mõsem Bill!]
I can't wait to lay hold of that fishing pole. I'm ready to catch a huge fish!

Por contrapartida, nós temos a segunda expressão do dia: to lose hold on something or someone.

I lost hold on the child, and she was nearly run over.

Esse é o segundo significado para a expressão to lose hold on somethin or someone. Ele tem um sentido mais figurado. Veja este exemplo:

The manager lost her hold on her employees and was fired.

That's it for today guys. Hope you liked it.

O que significa "to take its toll"?

A expressão é:  to take a/its/their toll.

This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won't say goodbye anymore

Algumas das possíveis tradução para This love has taken its toll on me é Este amor me causou dano, teve um péssimo efeito sobre mim. Veja este exemplo: Years of sunbathing took a toll on Mary's skin.

Veja alguns outros exemplos:
1) Bringing up nine children had taken its toll on my mother. [Educar nove crianças causou danos a minha mãe.]
2) The desease has taken a horrendous toll in parts of Western Africa.
3) Drug abuse takes quite a toll on the lives of people.

Vamos conhecer a primeira delas: shot in the dark.

Literalmente, shot in the dark significa um tiro no escuro. Veja este exemplo: It was just a shot in the dark. I had no idea I was exactly correct.

A parting shot é a nossa próxima expressão. Veja este exemplo: Her parting shot was "I' going to spend the evening with people who appreciate my company!"

As pessoas vivem experimentando desafios novos o tempo todo, e para isso usamos a expressão "to have a shot at". Veja este exemplo: He's proven himself to be a talented actor and now he's having a shot at directing his first play.

E finalmente, nossa última expressão: be shot to hell. Be shot to hell significa estar destruído ou numa condição deplorável. Veja este exemplo: His nerves were shot to hell afer only two years in that job.

Hello, my friends. How are you? Today I have a brand-new post for you about a word that may not be very familiar in your ears. The word is track. Not veryt recently, Lady Gaga released a song whose lyrics includes something like you're on the right track. What does that mean? It means she's telling you not to worry because you're doing the right thing, you're on the right track. If you want to learn this and other expressions with the word track today, keep on reading!

I have plenty of them actually, so I'll try not to make you overwhelmed with them. To start off, let's first try to understand what track itself means. Among several definitions Dictionary.com provided me with, one of them says tracks are footprints or other marks left by an animal, person, or vehicle. Can you picture what track is now? if not, just take a look at the picture to the side and you'll get it.

Tracks make me remember of those times I bring mud into my house on the bottom of my shoes and my mother yells: Don't track mud into the house! If your mother yelled that sentence to you, would you understand her? To track mud into a place is one of the most annoying things that can happen to a household. It means your shoes are dirty with mud and you're messing around the house with it, in other words, you're tracking mud into the house.

Now picture a classic scenario: You look for your can opener, but you never find it. Then you begin a hunt for it throuhout the entire house but to no avail. Only when you've already given up on finding it and are not even thinking about it anymore, there it is, at the most obvious place. While telling a friend what happened to you, you say: I spent the whole morning on the track of my can opener, but only found it when it didn't interest me anymore. When you're on track of someone or somethin, you're seeking it. I'm always on the track of my phone. I never know where I last put it. What about you? What or who are you always on the track of?

Now let's change the scenerio a litle bit: You must know that in order to be hired by some company, you have to show a very good resume containing all of your past achievement or failures. Let's suppose you're running for a position at a major company. Your application form's in very good shape, but soon you find out someone else with a strong track record filled your position. When someone has a strong track record in any field, it means he's perfect for that job or for a certain copany. It means he showed a good history of past achievements.

But let's still talk about the position you lost for someone else. Let's call him Fred. Suppose you find out Fred doesn't actually have a strong track record. In actuality, you have so much more experience than he and you don't understand why you were not chosen over him. You try to know a little bit more about Fred, and it doesn't take you much long until you find out he's got the inside track. That's why he won the contract. When someone has the inside track, it means he has an advantage over someone gained through special connections, special knowledge, or favoritism. Maybe Fred was the boss' close friend. No matter how much of a good professional you are, there's now way you'd get that contract instead of Fred.

Finally, let's talk about people that can only talk about one single subject. Doyou know someone like that? In Brazil, it's very common to find people who are obsessed with soccer. Wherever you find them, the very first thing they talk about is the last soccer match they watched on TV, or how well or badly some player performed. You can say people like that have one-track minds, that is, their minds think entirely or almost entirely about one subject.

Okay, that's it for today guys. I hope you liked it. See you next time!

Expressions with the word SHAPE

You must have already heard of the word shape. It's pretty common. And if you frequent a gym, you're even more into what I'm talking about. If you look it up on a dictionary, you'll see something like "the quality of a distinct object or body". Truth is, the word shape immediately reminds us of a perfect body, the ones you generally watch on commercials and the like. But the word shape alone is neutral, it doesn't tell us if the shape of a certain body is good or bad. To do so, you'd have to say Tom's in good shape, or Sally's in bad shape. But there's more. Let's dive right into it a little bit further!

Actually, not only can human bodies be in a good or bad shape. In order to say your car for example is functionally sound and sturdy, you can say your car is in good shape too. As for humans, there are many reasons for someone not to be in good shape. Maybe Tom doesn't exercise and that makes him be in bad shape. But a little accident could also have made him be in bad shape. You see? Whatever the way Tom's injured or delibitated, he's in bad shape the same way. Let's move on to our next expression with the word shape!

When something's in bad shape, what do you do? You try to fix it right? Let's imagine your house's in bad shape. It's dirty and messy. You want to clean and organize it immediaely because you need to put it on rent until tomorrow. So someone tells you: Please lick this house into shape so it will be easier to rent it tomorrow. To lick something into shape means to put something into good condition, possibly with considerate effort. Note you can also use that expression with people.

Em Inglês, nós temos a correspondente "so much as (that)..."

Veja este exemplo abaixo:
Computers games opened a new world, so much so you wonder what you used to do with your free time.

The path was overgrown with grass, so much so that I could easily have missed it altogether.

Na música Rehab, de Amy Winehouse, após a recusa de uma internação, ela diz: I'm not gonna spend ten weeks so have everyone think I'm on the MEND. So let's go!

To be on the mend significa se recuperar de saúde, ficar melhor, se tornar saudável de novo. Veja alguns outros exemplos: I cared for my father while he was on the mend. I took a leave of absense from work while I was on the mend. [Eu me preocupei com meu pai enquanto se recuperava. Eu tirei licença do trabalho enquanto me recuperava de saúde.]

Como disse anteriormente, to mend significa reparar. Veja este exemplo: Sue: I still miss Tony, but it's been a year since our big fight and we haven't spoken to each other since. Mother: Well, it's never too late to mend; why don't you call him up and apologize?

Veja este exemplo: Sally called up her uncle to apologize and try to mend fences.

Para finalizar, vamos conhecer a expressão to mend one's way. Também poderíamos dizer TO CHANGE ONE'S WAY. Veja este exemplo: John used to be very wild, but he's mended his ways. You'll have to mend your ways if you go out with Mary. She hates people to be late.

To wash shirts. Passar camisas? To iron shirts. Geralmente as dobramos. Em inglês, to fold shírts.

Além dele, temos a gola [collar], punho [cuff], bolso [pocket] e manga [sleeve].
