When you take care of something, you're making sure nothing wrong happens to it, or maybe something needs to be done and you're taking care of it. When you take care of someone like a child or an elderly person, you're keeping them safe or making sure they are supplied with everything they need.
If you're familiar with the phrasal verb take care of, you are pretty much done with the phrasal verb see to. But try to consider this: If you're throwing a party and you don't want to worry about the details of its planning you might want to consider hiring a planner to see to it. So the planner is going to see to the music, place, food, people, invitations, etc.
The inspiration for today's post comes from an article I read online this morning on the first semester of Jair Bolsonaro's brazilian misgovernment. It mentioned the fact that most of his election proposals haven't really panned out and all his focus has been centered around much less crucial matters.
What I want you to give your attention to now is the phrasal verb I just mentioned: pan out. Have you ever heard of it or even used it? If something panned out it means it happened in a successful way. So the article was just pointing out the fact most of brazilian president's proposals haven't turned out well.
But wait, "turned out"?, you might be wondering. If something turns out a certain way, it proves to be that certain way. So imagine you're a Bolsonaro supporter being proven wrong now that his government has turned out to be pretty bad, has proven to be pretty bad.
So notice another difference here between pan out and turn out. While the first prasal verb doesn't need a complement, the second one does: his plans didn't pan out; his plans didn't turn out well, successful, efficient, worthy, good at all.

For those who read my blog, you may have noticed that I tend to get a lot of inspiration from the songs I listen to. Some of them reflect my own taste in music, but some are just trendy music that very easily catches my attention.
Somewhere around June Taylor swift released her single called you need to calm down. Right in the beginning of the song I heard something like: "you say it in the street that's a knock-out but you say it in a tweet that's a cop-out". I thought it'd be a good topic to touch on this time. So let's dive right into it.
A knock-out is a very popular term in boxing referring to the act of hitting the other fighter to the ground in such a way they can't get back up again. If you hit someone with an argument in such a way they can't come up with a comeback that's also like a knock-out, which is more like what the singer meant in the song.
A cop-out on the other hand is way less honorable than a knock-out. It's when you create an excuse to take the way way out of a tricky situation. In the song's context, saying something controversial to someone in a tweet, where you have the comfort of anonymity or the security of being home behind a screen, is not really a knock-out. It's just a cop-out.
That way of interpreting the song is the closest to what the singer might've meant because she's been through a lot of hate on the internet before. So that's all for now guys. Talk to you next time!!!!
I was listening to a song by imagine dragons called natural. It's a song that came out earlier this year and I've liked it since the first time I heard it. Anyway, what made me bring that song up is the expression "to take an oath".
If you've heard of that expression before, this post is going to get easy for you from now on. That's because I'm going to try to explain the meaning of it.
When you take an oath or make an oath, you make a formal, binding promise; you swear to something. For example, when you become a witness in court, you're told to take an oath that you will always tell the truth.
The song goes like "took an oath by the blood on my hand". That's a more specific kind of promise. The one that involves blood in it, the blood oath. It's easy to think of two people taking a blood oath by cutting their own hands and shaking them together, or even licking each other's blood. Yeah that's gross.
The good thing is that you don't have to be so gross to use that expression. When you take an oath, you simply make a promise. It might be a formal one, but still a promise. You can use that expression to refer to the act of making a regular promise, but it's not the way people say it regularly. So maybe you wanna be funny or dramatic.
Enquanto eu lia um artigo de uma mulher falando sobre seu relacionamento abusivo e violento (que pode ser encontrado aqui), eu encontrei esta palavra: aftermath. Para contextualizar a parte do artigo que essa palavra apareceu, ela estava descrevendo os efeitos negativos ou as consequências da sua decisão de finalmente terminar o relacionamento. Veja só:"In the aftermath of the breakup, I couldn't sleep."
Aftermath pode ser usado pra se referir a qualquer consequência advinda de um evento significativo, especialmente quando ele for desagradável e traumático. Se você entrar no link do artigo, você vai ver que, além de não conseguir dormir, ela desenvolveu uma paranóia terrível por medo do que seu antigo parceiro poderia fazer depois do término. Veja mais exemplos:

Acima você vê uma pequena passagem do livro The Shining, de Stephen King. Ela marca a parte do livro em que eu estou lendo. Eu achei que seria legal trazer para o blog porque são duas expressões idiomáticas que empregam o hífen na mesma sentença. Vamos aprendê-las!
So-and-so pode ser usada quando você quiser se referir a alguém ou alguma coisa duma maneira genérica. Sabe quando você está contando alguma coisa e um personagem qualquer surge na história, mas você não acha o nome dele relevante ou sequer se lembra? Essa expressão vem a calhar nesse momento. Veja alguns exemplos:
She always keeps me up to date with the latest gossip - you know, so-and-so from down the road is having a baby and so-and-so's just bought a car.
She told me to ask so-and-so, but he didn't know, either.
He will tell you to do so-and-so, but read the instructions first, anyway.
Thus-and-such se parece muito com a expressão anterior, já que também pode ser usado de maneira genérica, mas diverge quando ela se refere apenas a coisas (e não pessoas). Veja este exemplo: Anytime he said thus and such, she said the opposite. Como adjetivo e advérbio, entretanto, thus-and-such significa "de uma maneira particular, específica, direcionada, instruída". Se seu chefe quer que você faça tudo duma maneira muito particular, por exemplo, você pode utilizar a expressão pra expressar esse martírio: My boss is so specific about the way a report is laid out. If you don't write it thus and such each and every time, you'll be sure to hear about it from him later. Esse exemplo mostra a expressão como advérbio. Veja outros como adjetivo:
In practical terms, it may be taken for granted that the world is thus and such, but for the sake of philosophical argument, we should not and cannot assume any such thing.

Os últimos posts entregam que eu tenho acompanhado Project Runway. Para quem ainda não sabe, trata-se dum reality show de competição entre designers de moda. E dentro desse universo, é claro que eu me depararia com muitas palavras relacionadas ao mundo da moda. Aesthetic é uma das mais recorrentes. Por isso, vamos estudá-la um pouquinho mais!
Aesthetic, como adjetivo, se refere a tudo aquilo que remete ao estudo, apreciação, noção e filosofia da beleza. Portanto, carrega um sentido positivo quando agregado a uma coleção de roupa, um prédio, um trabalho artístico, etc. Veja nesses exemplos:
The new building has little aesthetic value/appeal.
Furniture that is both aesthetic and functional.
The pictures give great aesthetic pleasure.
Como substantivo, aesthetic se refere a um conjunto de princípios que governam a ideia de beleza em dado tempo ou lugar. No vídeo abaixo, você vê alguém definindo a origem da aesthetic dos anos 80. Nesse sentido, independente do que você ache bonito ou feio, asthetic é mais uma configuração de expressão do que uma opinião.
Enquanto que no vídeo anterior, aesthetic é usado para designar a ideia de beleza de determinada época, no vídeo a seguir a palavra se refere a um conjunto de princípios de beleza expressados através, não apenas da aparência, mas também do comportamento, ações e ideologias. Por exemplo, quem nunca ouviu falar do emo aesthetic, grunge aesthetic, classy aesthetic? São estilos bem famosos. No vídeo, você vê uma youtuber te ajudando a achar o seu aesthetic.
Voltando para o contexto de lá de Project Runway, um dos motivos pelo qual a palavra aesthetic é tão usada no julgamento dos looks dos competidores é que ela também se refere ao estilo e gosto individual (além de sua expressão). Por isso, as vezes eles são acusados de ter um aesthetic acessível, fashionista, feio, moderno... (quando não são acusados de uma ausência total de qualquer aesthetic).
No primeiro episódio de Abstract: The Art of Design, um ilustrador descreve uma das frustrações intrínsecas ao seu trabalho. A legenda do screetshot é apenas a parte final de todo o raciocínio: This is not, like, a coy thing to say, "Oh, I don't believe I'm talented." This is real, like, being absolutely painfully aware of how you're not good enough to do something on command. Você consegue identificar exatamente qual a sua frustração só pela citação?
Se não, é possível que o sentido da expressão ON COMMAND tenha atrapalhado. Quando você consegue fazer algo on command, você o faz quando bem entender. Se trata duma habilidade que pode ser utilizada sob o seu comando a qualquer momento que for necessário. No caso do ilustrador ou de qualquer outra profissão que envolva criatividade, a habilidade de produzir nem sempre é acessada on demmand. E isso é ainda mais frustrante quando existe um prazo de entrega.
Só como mais um exemplo de bônus, há um tempo assisti a uma entrevista de Bryce Dallas Howard no programa de Conan mostrando a sua habilidade de chorar on command. Enquanto pra alguns atores chorar em cena é um desafio, pra ela é moleza. Confira o vídeo logo abaixo:
No fim do primeiro desafio de Project Runway, um reality show de competição entre designers de moda, os jurados se uniram pra discutir um dos seis piores looks. Eles comentaram que, apesar de explicarem o motivo daquela posição desprivilegiada no reality, a competidora não aceitou e tentou convencê-los. É dentro desse contexto que surge o diálogo do screenshot acima: "She actually tried to convince us, to no avail". Você entende o que quer dizer a expressão em negrito?
Quando alguém faz algo to no avail, ela o faz com nenhum sucesso ou efeito. É um ato mal sucedido. A expressão pode ser também "to little or no avail" quando você quer considerar o mínimo possível de sucesso. Voltando para o contexto do reality, caso você ainda não tenha entendido, o que aconteceu foi que a competidora falhou miseravelmente ao tentar convencer os jurados da qualidade de seu trabalho. Confira outros exemplos da expressão aplicada:

Em IDGAF, Dua Lipa já superou seu ex. Com um tom indiferente, ela diz coisas como: it's too late now; I don't give a fuck; your time is up. No meio de tanto desabafo, ela também diz algo que chamou minha atenção: You made your bed, sleep in it. Você pode encontrar esse verso retirado do estrofe acima. Você consegue entendê-lo?
Quando Dua diz isso pra seu ex, o que ela quer dizer é que ele deve aguentar todas as consequências desagradáveis daquilo que ele mesmo provocou. Você também pode substituir o verbo sleep por lie, como em:
I don't feel at all bad that he has no friends after having sold everyone out on his way to the top. He made his bed, and now he has to lie in it.
It's unfortunate that it turned out badly, but Sara made her bed and now she must lie in it.
No quadro Spill Your Guts do programa de Gordon Ramsay, os participantes tem que se desafiar com perguntas comprometedoras e desafios culinários bastante nojentos. A ideia é simples. Se você se recusa a responder uma pergunta constrangedora, você tem que comer qualquer item da mesa que o competidor escolher. Em 8:51 do vídeo, o convidado está prestes a fazer a próxima pergunta, mas antes enfatiza que é a pergunta mais importante da rodada, especialmente career-wise. O que ele quis dizer com isso?
-wise é o que chamamos de sufixo. Eles são elementos que, quando acrescentados depois dum radical, formam uma nova palavra e mudam a classe gramatical. Nesse caso aqui, o radical é a palavra career, que significa carreira. Ele está sendo usado nessa situação pra inserir o sentido de "ao que se trata de" (speaking of), "ao que se refere a" (referring to). Portanto, o que o convidado quis dizer foi que, especialmente ao que se refere a carreira, a pergunta era a mais importante da rodada.
Com isso, dá pra perceber que esse uso do sufixo -wise é bastante versátil. Se alguém perguntar como você vai, por exemplo, e você quiser ser específico ao que se refere a sua família, sua carreira, sua saúde, dinheiro, você pode dizer: family-wise, things are ok; money-wise, I could be better; health-wise, I'm great, etc... Isso é o que você ouve nos primeiros segundos do vídeo acima: this has been hands down the worst work trip I've ever been on. Trata-se do dono do canal lamentando uma série de eventos azarados que sucederam aquele momento. Pra gente, o que importa nessa frase é a expressão 'hands down', que é estranhamente usada como um advérbio.
Hands down é uma correspondente de expressões como decisively, easily, unquestionably, etc. Você pode usá-la em situações em que seu nível de convicção e confiança está nas alturas. Pra entender de onde essa expressão vem, você precisa imaginar uma situação bem curiosa. É que em corridas de cavalo, quando o jóquei se sente confiante de sua vitória a poucos metros da chegada, ele tende a abaixar as mãos e diminuir o controle sobre as rédeas. Você não precisa saber da etimologia de toda expressão pra poder usá-la, mas eu achei essa legal demais pra deixá-la de fora. Confira alguns exemplos:

We were really unprepared for our last game, and the other team won hands down.
