Maneiras de dizer ASSUSTAR ALGUÉM ou LEVAR UM SUSTO em Inglês

Já que estamos a pouco tempo do próximo Halloween, eu achei que seria bem oportuno abordar diversas maneiras de dizer algo que se faz bastante durante essa data: assustar as pessoas. E, por sinal, diquei bem surpreso com a quantidade de expressões relacionadas a isso. Vai ver o vocabulário da língua inglesa foi influenciado demais pela cultura do Halloween. Vamos às expressões:

be scared shitless  (British, American & Australian taboo) also be scared shit (American taboo)
to be very frightened I was woken by the sound of someone moving around downstairs - I was scared shitless!

frighten/scare somebody to death
to make someone feel very frightened David suddenly appeared in the doorway and scared me to death.

scared shitless (rude)
extremely frightened I was scared shitless when I first moved out here, but things still worked out fine in the end.

frighten one out of one's wits and scare one out of one's wits; frighten someone out of a year's growth; scare someone out of a year's growth; frighten one out of one's mind; scare one out of one's mind
Fig. to frighten one very badly. Oh! That loud noise scared me out of my wits. I'll give him a good scolding and frighten him out of his wits. Oh, you frightened me out of a year's growth! You frightened Bob out of his mind.

frightened to death and scared to death
1. Lit. frightened to the point of dying. This poor animal has been frightened to death by the attacking dogs.
2. Fig. frightened or anxious. I don't want to go to the dentist today. I'm frightened to death. I'm frightened to death of spiders.

scared silly
frightened very much. I was scared silly by the loud explosion. We were scared silly to go into the park after dark.

scare someone stiff
Fig. to frighten someone severely. (Stiff = dead.) That loud noise scared me stiff. The robber jumped out and scared us stiff.

scare the pants off someone
tv. to frighten someone suddenly. The piano lid fell and scared the pants off my parents.

frighten/scare the (living) daylights out of somebody
to frighten someone very much Don't come up behind me like that. You scared the living daylights out of me!

scare the hell out of you
to make you feel extremely frightened scare you to death His idea of fun scares the hell out of me.

frighten/scare the life out of somebody
to make someone feel very frightened She frightened the life out of me, shouting like that.
