go scot-free

Imagine you do something wrong like steal, lie, cheat, but in the end you turn out to go unpunished. In situations like that, you can say you went scot-free. That's a way of saying you got away with something wrong you've done. By the way, to go scot free is the same thing as the phrasal verb to get away with. Besides those options, you've also got "to get away/off scot-free", which basically means the same thing: to avoid the punishment that you deserve or expect. So imagine the police can't catch a thief. So the thief got away scot-free. They couldn't give him the punishment he deserved. That's it for now. Talk to you next time!
