Imagine you and your friend like the same girl. It doesn't matter who saw her first. The thing is, that kind of contest between you two is kind of deteriorating your friendship more and more and the last thing in the world you want is to lose your childhood friend. So you say: For the sake of our friendship, I'll forget about that girl. She's all yours now.

For the sake of something is the same as for the benefit of something, as in for the sake of my company, I'll have to lay off a few employees; for the sake of my marriage, I'll have to stop hanging out with my friends every night and give my wife more attention; for the sake of my health, I'll stop eating junk food, and so on and so forth.
