I have two very interesting idioms today I want to share with you. The first one reminds me of people who love to be in the spotlight, or in other words, they love to get privileges and be appreciated. The spotlight to which I referred is that bright light that goes straight to performers on the stage, making them stand out. But our idiom doesn't necessarily have to be used with professional performers, singers or artists in general that take their glamorous lifestyle for granted. On the contrary, it has more to do with average people that may receive accolades or attention at some rare point of their lives, which makes them have a day in the sun. So what happens to someone that has his day in the sun? They get attention and are appreciated, especially if they don't normally get any kind of privilege. It's like a rare occasion like when you for instance take an unexpected day off from work to rest after long periods working nonstop. People who have their day in the sun can also say that "every god has its day", which demonstrates that even undeserving people get rewarded at some point.
And the second idiom is more intuitive for us: "a place in the sun". In Portuguese, we would say "um lugar ao sol". When you find your place in the sun, you find wealth, happiness or whatever makes you happy. Maybe you're studying English to earn your place in the sun. Certainly it would provide you with money and things that you want. When I hear that idiom, it makes me remember of so many students that leave high school without the slightest clue of what they want out of life. They simply want their place in the sun, but don't know how to get there.
