Receiving a compliment

In a previous post, I talked about how to compliment someone on their appearance. But how would it be for you to receive a compliment? What would you say? I'm here to talk about that. There are a few things, or set sentences that can come really in handy if you're in a situation where you need to say something after receiving a compliment. Do you get compliments on a regular basis? Tell us in the comment section.

So, okay, imagine you just got a compliment. What should you say now? Here are a few options: Really? That's what you say as a way to show you're surprised and flattered by the compliment. Do you think so? That's something you might want to say if someone says you seem to have lost some weight for example.  Thank you: That's very plain and simple. It works in any kind of situation. That's very kind of you: I see that this is one of those sentences many English students haven't learned yet. You can change the adjective depending on the situation, like: that's very rude of you, that's very selfish of you, that's very nice of you, that's very generous of you.

Now imagine someone complimented you on your jacket. If you agree with what they say, you can say: I like it too. If you think what you're wearing is not that much of a big deal, you can say: Thanks, but I don't think so. If you take compliments very seriously and they usually change your day for the better, you can say: Thanks! That made my day! If you're the kind who's not very good at receiving compliments and always gets embarrassed in situations like that, you can say: I'm blushing. And finally, if you're not sure what someone has said is really a compliment, but you don't want to question it, you can say: I'll take that as a compliment. That's it for today. Talk to you next time!
