Entendendo a palavra BOND e como usá-la

BOND - SUBSTANTIVO

Tanto numa tradução literal quanto numa figurada, bond, como substantivo, significa ligação. Na literal, ela se refere ao lugar onde duas partes são ligadas, a parte de ligação de algo. Veja o exemplo:

• When the ​glue has set, the bond ​formed is ​watertight. [Onde a cola pegou, a ligação formada é impermeável]

Já num sentido mais figurado, bond pode se referir àquela ligação ou relacionamento muito próximo que as pessoas desenvolvem com o passar tempo. Veja este exemplo:

• There has been a ​close bond between them ​ever since she ​saved him from ​drowning. [Há uma ligação forte entre eles desde que ele o salvou do afogamento]

BOND - VERBO

Já como verbo, to bond significa estabalecer uma ligação, estreitar um relacionamento e se tornar próximo de alguém. Veja:

• The ​aim was to bond the ​group into a ​closely ​knit ​team. [O objetivo era aproximar o grupo tornando-os num time estreitamente engajados]
• The ​hospital gives ​mothers no ​quiet ​private ​time in which to bond with ​their ​babies. [O hospital não dá para as mães um tempo privado calmo para construir uma ligação com seus bebês.]

Assim como acontece quando ela exerce o papel de substantivo, to bond como verbo também pode passar uma ideia mais literal: juntar duas partes de alguma coisa. Veja:

Como dizer vestibular em Inglês?

Antes de responder a pergunta do post, é necessário primeiro entender as condições culturais de alguém que fala Inglês. E depois disso, considerar de onde essa pessoa é. É dos Estados Unidos? É da Inglaterra? Isso é importante porque, dependendo de onde esse indivíduo morar, talvez não exista uma correspondente direta para a palavra vestibular, já que vestibular possa não fazer parte da realidade dele.

Nos EAstados Unidos, por exemplo, eles tem SAT e ACT. Assim como os vestibulares do Brasil, essas provas também são árdas e chegam até 5 horas de duração. Mas ao contrário do que acontece aqui, você não tem essa ideia de passar ou deixar de passar. Isso porque os resultados são numéricos e servem pra todas as universidades americanas. Caso ele tire uma nota muito ruim, não há tanto drama quanto aqui no Brasil. Dois meses depois é possível fazer a prova mais uma vez. Ou seja, toda essa estripulia que a gente vê aqui quando alguém passa em algum curso concorrido em determinada universidade é menos comum nos Estados Unidos, seja quando o resultado é positivo ou negativo.

Dessa maneira, o que os estudantes fazem para entrar numa universiadade americana nada mais é do que um exam, a test. Mas se fôssemos procurar por um termo que pudesse passar o conceito do nosso vestibular, poderíamos usar o termo "college entrance exam". A ideia passada ao pé da letra nesse termo é bem auto explicativa. Claro que, numa conversa com um americano por exemplo, é comum que você tenha que dar uma leve explicada sobre como funciona os vestibulares aqui. Veja alguns exemplos com o termo "college/university entrance exam":

O post de hoje não vai ser dedicado a aquisição de vocabulário relacionado a sentimentos, como happy, sad, irritated, etc. O post será sim sobre sentimentos, mas em torno da própria palavra feeling. Como dizer pais em Inglês? falsos cognatos

Antes de qualquer coisa, eu preciso explicar o que são os chamados falsos cognatos. É muito simples de entender. Não são nada mais do que palavras muito parecidas entre uma língua e outra, mas cujos significados são diferentes. Um exemplo disso é prejudice, que parece com prejuízo, mas que na verdade quer dizer preconceito. O segundo exemplo que eu quero dar é justamente o tema do post de hoje.

A palavra inglesa PARENTS não significa parentes, mas sim pais. Se você quer dizer parentes em Inglês, use a palavra RELATIVE. Se você chama algum adulto de parent em Inglês, você não está especificando se essa pessoa é a mãe ou o pai. Ela é simplesmente a responsável por um ou mais filhos. Veja alguns exemplos:
