Double negative: o que é e como evitá-lo?

That won’t do you no good.

I ain’t got no time for supper.

Nobody with any sense isn’t going.

I can’t find my keys nowhere.

She never goes with nobody.

Antes que você, estudante de Inglês básico comece a aprender errado de mim, e você, estudante de Inglês mais avançado, me acuse de ferir conceitos básicos da gramática padrão, eu assumo que todas as sentenças acima possuem um erro gramatical em comum: double negative. Ou seja, se você olhar bem, vai perceber que há dois elementos negativos na mesma sentença, o que em Inglês é gramaticalmente inaceitável. Para você entender melhor do que se trata isso, eu vou corrigir todas aquelas sentenças acima. Veja:

Em resumo, quando você usa um verbo em sua forma negativa, como em He isn't working... we can't play... não utilize qualquer palavra com teor negativo como nobody, nowhere, e vice versa. Além dessas correções acima, existem maneiras mais peculiares de se eliminar uma double negative. Isso porque você pode optar por elimitar o elemento negativo que está no prefixo de uma palavra como uncommon, insignificant, irresponsable, ou uma palavra que age como negativa como os advérbios barely, hardly, rarely, seldom, etc.
