Imagine you've got a circle of friends who like to tell jokes and laugh. They like to have fun. Among those friends, there's a very rich person who, like everybody else, is always telling jokes. There's a difference between him and the rest of your friends though. Every time that rich person tells a joke, everybody laughs like there's no tomorrow. It's like he's the best stand up comedian ever. But then you wonder: is it just because he's rich and everybody wants to curry favor with him or is he really that funny?
When you're talking about that rich friend of yours and what happens every time he tells a joke, here's what you say: What I think happens here is that his jokes are not always the best. It's just that rich man's joke is always funny. When you came to that conclusion, what you really meant was that your friends were actually a bunch of freeloaders. They don't laugh at your rich friend's jokes because they're always funny. They laugh because they just want to flatter him and take advantage of his friendship.
Now imagine you're a very clumsy student and everybody's always making fun of you. No matter what you do, you're always the butt of every joke. What does that mean? It means you're the target of bullying, you're always the reason for a joke. But please keep in mind that expression is a little offensive because of the word butt. Take into consideration who you're addressing that expression to and you'll be fine. Now let's move on to our next expression with the word joke.
Let's say you hang out with two people that are very close to each other. Every time you're with them, you actually feel very left out. And what makes you feel that way is that they have a lot of inside jokes. What does that mean? It means they tell jokes that only make sense to them because they're the only ones who know certain facts or context. Alright. That's it for now. Talk to you next time!
