O que significa "to drive a wedge between somebody/something"?

Imagine you and your friend got into an argument and since then you haven't spoken to each other. In a situation like that, we could say that argument drove a wedge between you two. When something like an argument drives a wedge between somebody or something, it causes them a division, it causes them to oppose one another or turn against one another.

Many reasons can make two people or a group of people turn against each other. For example, imagine you have a very jealous boyfriend who never lets you hang out with your friends and wants to control you all the time. Jealousy in that case can drive a wedge between you two, because overtime you won't be able to handle such pressure and finally break up.

It's important to know that we can use that expression referring to things. Take a look at this example and draw your own conclusions: The issue of global warming has driven a wedge between our government and the rest of the world. I hope this helps. Talk to you next time!
