The culture of perfectionism

Since children we've been taught making mistakes is a bad thing and therefore should be avoided at all costs. There's a belief one should always be perfectionist and hit the target at the first try. I'll tell you what I believe. I believe we should make as many mistakes as possible. We can't take shortcuts if we don't take many wrong roads until we find out there's a shortcut.

As far as English learning goes, that's one of those things that keep us from fluency. When will we have the chance to learn a language if we don't allow ourselves to make mistakes? As adults, we think we're supposed to know how to say or do things in the right way because there is competition out there. Yes, there is competition. But the competition is also scared of making mistakes as much as you are, because it's not about an only person or community, but a whole culture of perfectionists. So we're all victims of it.

There are so many fears when it comes to making a mistake while speaking English. You wonder if they're going to laugh at you, if people will notice your accent, if you're using the right words, and so on and so forth. There's always too much to think where there should only be passion and determination. That's why I ask you to stop being so perfectionist and start being nice to yourself. It is okay to make mistakes today.
