Expressões com o verbo BLOW que significam ficar com raiva, perder a paciência, ficar irritado

In English language, I've found a lot of expressions meaning to lose temper. I don't know why they need so many expressions referring to getting angry, but I would say that as far as I know English speakers are not angrier than other people. But since there are so many expressions for that, I decided to boil them down to only expressions with the verb BLOW.

The first of them is TO BLOW A FUSE, which as you can predict, means to become uncontrollably angry, as in The laptop now won't turn on. I'm close to blowing a fuse. The second expression is TO BLOW ONE'S TOP, which means the same thing, as in I caught my girlfriend with another man. I was so mad that I blew my top and kicked him out of the house.

Up to this point, you've seen two expressions meaning to lose temper with the word BLOW. I have no clue about their origins, why people say expressions like that or anything, but I would risk saying that the verb to blow reminds us of what we do when we're extremely angry. In Portuguese, we would say esfaborar, explodir, bufar. I've met some people that once annoyed can turn into monsters. Sometimes they're normally calm, but radically change when they lose their temper. You know what else they do at these times? They BLOW A GASKET, which is our third expression. See this example: When her husband realised how much she'd spent he blew a gasket.

There are still two more expressions. I told you there were too many. TO BLOW OFF STREAM is our last but one expression, which this time means something a little bit different from the other examples. When you blow off some stream, of course it means you're angry, but you're expressing your anger or frustration in order to get rid of it. Some people do that by talking nonstop on the phone. Take this example: I've told her she can call me and talk any time she wants to blow some stream. Sometimes you BLOW OFF STREAM or LET OFF STREAM (which is another way of saying it) when you need to relax after something stressful (and not necessarily when you're angry). Example: After a long car trip, the kids need to run around a bit and let off stream.

And finally, our last expression: TO BLOW ONE'S STACK, which simply means to lose your cool/shout/become very angry, as in Don't blow your stack in front of the kids. It's a bad example.
