over the edge: o que isso significa?

When you're describing something and you want to exaggerate some aspect of it in a bad way, you can say that it's over the edge. For example, you went to see a performance by some singer at a concert, and when you came back home, the way you described it was: Her performance was over the edge! That doesn't mean you liked the performance. It means that maybe there was too much to be good. It was maybe too noisy, too crowded, or too long. It was over the edge because in your opinion it should not be out of control.

So imagine you have a relative that's grieving the death of her son. You know that she is not taking it too naturally, because at all times she is acting like crazy, and that's starting to worry because you fear she might harm herself. While talking about it to a friend of yours, you say that "as upset and out of control as she is I fear that the stress she's feeling could push her over the edge and make her do something crazy". When you're over the edge, you're in a condition of extreme emotion or mental suffering. So take the literal meaning of the expression. When you are over the edge of a building for example, you may fall or happen something too bad to you. So that's why when you describe someone as over the edge they are in danger or in an extreme situation. That's the expression of today. Take care!
