A woman called in and said the reason she broke up with her last boyfriend was that he was too rich. She gave them explanations on why that bothered her, including that he was too spoiled and although he had a lot of money he didn't have any perspective with his own life. So the speaker added something by saying: You're right, because even if you became rich marrying him, you would live under his parents' thumb. But what does that mean?
When you live, or when you're kept under someone's thumb, you're controlled by them. So imagine that girl married that rich spoiled man. After a while, they wouldn't manage to have an independent life because her husband would always depend on his family financially speaking. So they wouldn't be rich for real after all.
