Veja alguns exemplos:

What kind of behavior should parents expect to see in their children?
Most children spend the majority of their time in the care of their parents and relatives.

Textos traduzidos: Que Horas Ela Volta? - Plot Summary

Val, a woman from Pernambuco, moves to São Paulo in an attempt to provide a better life for her daughter, Jéssica. Val, with some misgivings, had left her daughter at the care of the girl's grandfather [Val, com um pouco de apreensão, tinha deixado a sua filha aos cuidados do avô da garota.]. In São Paulo, Val finds a job as a live-in housemaid in an affluent household where she takes care of the family's only child, Fabinho, to whom she grows strongly attached.

Thirteen years later, Val is economically stable, but she harbors feelings of guilt over having left her daughter. [Treze anos depois, Val está economicamente estável, mas ela mantém sentimentos de culpa por ter deixado sua filha] When Fabinho is about to do an entrance examination for the University of São Paulo, Val unexpectedly receives a call from Jessica asking for her help as she is travelling to São Paulo with the aim of taking the same exam [Quando Fabinho está prestes a fazer vestibular para a Universidade de São Paulo, Val inesperadamente recebe uma ligação de Jéssica pedindo ajuda já que ela está viajando para São Paulo com a intenção de fazer a mesma prova]. With the prior approval of Val's bosses, Jéssica is welcome with open arms to stay at the mansion; however, only after Jéssica openly flouts the servant's protocol and moves around the house without any apparent restraint [Com a prévia aprovação dos patrões de Val, Jéssica é bem-vinda com os braços abertos na mansão; Por outro lado, só depois Jéssica abertamente infringe o protocolo de empregado e circula pela casa sem nenhuma aparente restrição]. As a result, the situation of the new arrival's presence becomes complicated for the whole household [Como resultado, a situação da presença da nova chegada se torna complicada para toda a casa].

Mixing drama and comedy, the film addresses the cultural and socio-economic differences between two of Brazil's geographical regions: the Northeast and the Southeast [Misturando drama e comédia, o filme trata das diferenças culturais e socio-econômicas entre duas regiões geográficas do Brasil: o Nordeste e o Sudeste].

LIVE-IN + housekeeper / nanny / housemaid

I have a love-in lover and we respect each other's individuality a lot.

  • Many teachers expressed serious misgivings about the new tests.
  • My only misgiving is that we might not have enough time to do the job well.

1. That restaurant has the best all-you-can eat barbecue in the city.

Veja alguns exemplos:

I can't believe my husband's been having an affair all this time right under my nose.

I thought I'd never be able to have an affair but then she appeared to me and I couldn't resist her.

If I ever find out you have an affair, I'll never forgive you.

Veja alguns exemplos:

  • The firm built a model of the laboratory, so that the lab's future users could do a walk-through and make suggestions.
  • The gas company offers a free walk-through inspection of your home to identify potential savings.

  • This walkthrough is for members of staff using the software for the first time.

Idioms about MUSIC

If you're a frequent reader of mine, you know I've been writing some short stories containing the idioms I want to teach you. This time, we're touching on a few idioms relating to the musical universe. Of course their meanings don't have to have necessarily something directly to do with music, but its origin or literal meaning might. After the short story, you'll find all the idioms used in the story followed by their meanings.

I'm a musician and play in an orchestra. One of these days I had the chance to meet one of my favorite singers. He was attending the same party my orchestra was playing at and I couldn't have missed the chance to say hello to him. At first, he seemed like a nice guy, but after a few seconds I noticed kind of a snobbish tone. He wouldn't stop blowing his own trumpet about how much of a huge success his last work was. I tried to make him understand I'm actually a huge fan of his and know everything about his work (without him saying it all over again), but he sounded like a broken record.

But the worst was still to come. Before I could properly introduce myself, he started speaking nonstop and I didn't get to tell him I'm actually a musician myself and part of the orchestra officially invited to play at the party. So he committed the most terrible gaffe: He said the orchestra could only play elevator music. Can you believe that? To top it off, he added that he and his family could have a jam session and would still make it sound much better than that. I could have made a scene in front of everybody and called him a jerk, but I just left him speaking alone without saying goodbye.

IDIOMS USED IN THE SHORT STORY

blow one's own trumpet: proudly boasting about your own talents and success.
like a broken record: someone who repeats the same thing again and again.
elevator music: pleasant but boring recorded music that is played in public places.
jam session: playing improvised music in an informal setting.

Façade: a word in English that's written with ç

If you don't know, the letter ç is not only found in Portuguese. You can also find it in Turkish and Russian. What maybe you didn't expect is that there's a word English speakers use containing the letter ç: façade.

If you look up its meaning, you'll see that it's mostly used as a technical term for engineering and architecture when it means frontage, the principal face of a building. But the interesting thing about that word is that it can also be used in a metaphorical way if you're referring to a pretending front that may deceive one because it's artificial. Take a look at this example: "Let´s  drop our façades and deep down, talk over this matter”. I hope this helps. Talk to you next time!
