live within means

Imagine you have a friend who loves to spend money on things he doesn't need. What's even worse is that he is unemployed and can't afford to spend what he doesn't have. When you have a chance to speak some sense into him, here's what you say: You have to try to live within your means, otherwise you're going to be in the red [experiencing the situation of spending more money than you earned]. The expression we're touching on today is "to live within means". That's the same as saying spening no more money than one has. I know it's hard for anyone to struggle to live within their means, but that's what responsible people do. What about you? Do you try to live within your means and avoid future headaches or you go spending money on everything you see? Talk to you next time!
