You go to the movies and when you come back home, your brother asks you: how was it? and you say: Nothing to write home about. What does that mean?

When something is nothing to write home about, it is mediocre, it is not as good as expected. For example, you go to a concert of one of the biggest stars, and when you're asked about it, you say that it was nothing to write home about. It might have been good, but not as good as you expected. Sometimes you use that expression in a funny way to refer to things that are obviously bad, like "war is nothing to write home about".
