As English speakers, we very often misunderstand what people say in English. So we all know it's rude to keep asking what? what? But what's one of the ways that's less rude to communicate to the other person that you didn't understand what they said and you need them to repeat? Today I have a very common way among native English speakers to express mishearing or confusion. The expression is "what say? or "say what?"
That expressions is the same as "what did you say", only in a very informal way. But don't worry, you won't sound like an illiterate person if you use that expression. It's surely widely used and let us all agree it is way more simple than saying "what did you say" or "can you repeat that". Expressions like the ones I just used sometimes show a lack of knowledge in the language because you keep repeating them all the time when you don't understand something. So next time you can't understand what someone says in English, in a very subtle way you should ask: What say? That's it for today. Talk to you next time!
