Have you ever felt like you are in a place where you're not welcome? For example, in your family there's a cousin of yours you haven't spoken with in a while because of a silly argument you had a lot of time ago. Since then you both haven't come to terms yet and sit to talk about it. Even so, you decide to go to his birthday party that happens to be on a day you have nothing else more important to do.

So you show up and your cousin doesn't react too well to your presence. At one point of the party, you hear him saying something like: I knew he would turn up like a bad penny. What does that mean? To turn up like a bad penny means to arrive at a place or event where you are not wanted. Maybe you were welcome by the rest of your family at that party.
