try a different/change tack: o que isso significa?

Imagine you're a very frustrated teacher failing to catch the attention of your students. You don't know what to do anymore. You've tried to talk some sense into them, give them a whole speech on good manners and respect, but all you've got so far is lack of consideration, too much noise and disrespect. One day, while you're opening up to another teacher, he suggests you some changes in the way you behave in class. Among the many things he tells you, one stands out. Here's what he says: Instead of always telling your students what you want, why don't you try a different tack  andask them what they want?

When you try a different tack or change tack, you start dealing with a situation in a different way, especially when it comes to communication. So take mothers as an example. they're always trying a different tack with their children to see which one works best. Some believe speaking too much and too loud works better, others believe speaking in a low tone and pitch while looking them in the eye is the best option. Notice that when they change tack like that, there's always something related to communication and the act of looking for better ways to get your message across. Sometimes a professional speaker may have trouble getting their message across to the audience. So they have to try a different tack and see if the audience responds better. That's it for today guys. Take care!
