to blow the lid off something: o que isso significa?

Everybody knows how passionate about soap operas Brazilians are. It's not just a way of entertainment, it goes beyond that. It's a cultural movement that shows what's trending around the four corners of Brazil. When a soap opera brings up topics that's for a lot of time been ignored or forbidden, you can see a lot of different reactions among brazilians.

For example, lately the soap operas have touched on gay marriage and gay causes in general very often. One of these days, there was the first gay kiss on brazilian television aired on the most popular channel around here. Some people were for the idea, and others couldn't disagree more. The truth is, at the time the first gay kiss was presented on mainstream, the soap opera blew the lid off gay marriage. But wait, what does that mean?

When someone blows or takes the lid off something, it makes public something that was previously not known or hidden. In some case, the thing made public is something that's considered bad or controversial. For example, after many years of investigation, the police finally blew the lid off corruption in the town hall. And that's our expression of the day. Take care!
