Inglês com Friends: o que significa "lose face"?

I was watching Friends when Phoebe bumps into his ex boyfriend she hasn't seen in a lot of time. They still have feelings for each other, but they both prefer to keep pretending there's nothing going on and that they don't feel anything for each other at all. After all, it's been a while. So the first thing his ex boyfriend says is that he's seeing someone else because he got inspired by how well together Phoebe and her current boyfriend were when he last saw them.

When he said that, Phoebe let him know that she and the boyfriend he was referring to were actually no longer together, which was the best thing he could hear at that moment. So, as a very honest act, he said he's actually not seeing anyone, and that he said that just so he wouldn't lose face. But what, what does lose face mean?

When you lose face, you lose status, you become less respectable. So Phoebe's ex boyfriend decided it would be better to say he was seeing someone else just to prove he's been doing fine since they broke up. At the moment he learned they were both alone, they had nothing else to lose and became honest with her. I hope you understood the concept of that expression and how and when to correctly use it. That's it for today. Take care!
